When is IEC Required
IEC is mandatory for importing or exporting goods from India. Even ecommerce sellers on Amazon or Flipkart exporting products need IEC. The code remains valid for life unless surrendered or cancelled.
Some items are restricted or prohibited from import/export. Check the DGFT website for restricted items list before starting. IEC holders must comply with FEMA regulations and maintain proper documentation.
Application Process
Apply online at dgft.gov.in or through authorized service providers. The application requires PAN card, bank account details, and address proof. Digital signature or Aadhaar eSign verification completes the process.
Filing fee is Rs. 500 for most applicants.DGFT issues the IEC within 2-3 working days for straightforward applications. The IEC code is valid throughout India and doesn't require renewal.
Documents Required
PAN card copy is mandatory. Address proof can be electricity bill, telephone bill, or bank statement. Bank certificate or pre-printed cancelled cheque confirms bank account details. Passport-size photographs complete the application.
Post IEC Requirements
Importers must file Bill of Entry with customs. Exporters need Shipping Bill and other customs documentation. Maintain records of all import-export transactions for 5 years as per FEMA guidelines.
